Carnival of the Waters ist eine eintägige Veranstaltung auf der Donau, die durch Performances, Geschichtenerzählen und Rituale Themen wie Wasser, Migration und Ancestral Spirituality erforscht.
Der Carnival findet am Wasser statt, weil Wasser und Themen rund um Migration eng miteinander verbunden sind: Es kann töten, ist aber zugleich lebensnotwendig. Die Veranstaltung lädt dazu ein, sich mit nicht-religiöser Ahnen-Spiritualität (Ancestral Spirituality) auseinanderzusetzen und zentrale Themen wie Heimat, Zugehörigkeit und verkörpertes Wissen tiefgehend zu erforschen. Es wird außerdem spezielle kinderfreundliche Angebote geben, die gezielt afrikanische Kinder verschiedener Generationen in der Diaspora ansprechen.
Die nigerianische Aktivistin, Kuratorin und Kunstvermittlerin Henrie Dennis stellt mit dem Carnival of Connections kulturelle Ausdrucksformen und Erfahrungen der afrikanischen Community in Österreich in den Mittelpunkt. Der nigerianische Carnival ist eine Form des Protests. Er hat eine komplexe Geschichte, die von kolonialer Gewalt, der Rückkehr ehemals versklavter afro-brasilianischer Gemeinschaften nach Nigeria und tief verwurzelten lokalen Traditionen geprägt ist. In diesem Kontext erforscht der Carnival of Connections Themen wie Kolonialismus, Sklaverei, Befreiung, Wurzeln, Essen und Kultur. Dabei bringt er den Diskurs über Demokratie, Vielfalt und kulturelle Integration in den öffentlichen Raum.

Carnival of the Waters is a one-day event on the Danube exploring themes of water, migration, and ancestral spirituality through performance, storytelling, and rituals.
The event takes place by and on the water – as water and migration are inextricably linked: water can be deadly, yet it is essential for life. The carnival also invites participants to engage with non-religious forms of ancestral spirituality and to reflect deeply on key themes such as home, belonging, and embodied knowledge. In addition, there will be child-friendly activities specifically designed to resonate with African children of different generations in the diaspora.
With this project, the Nigerian activist, curator, and cultural mediator Henrie Dennis highlights the cultural expressions and experiences of the African community in Austria. Rooted in protest, the Nigerian carnival carries a complex history – shaped by colonial violence, the return of formerly enslaved Afro-Brazilian communities to Nigeria, and long-standing local traditions. Within this framework, the Carnival of Connections explores themes such as colonialism, slavery, liberation, roots, food, and culture. At the same time, it brings the conversation around democracy, diversity, and cultural integration into public space.
